Students then demonstrate competency by completing and submitting a Flex checkpoint worksheet for each unit.

Parents will have access to educational resources and the Flex Curriculum Resource Directory. The directory will supplement their selected course curriculum and to assist in planning and teaching each unit. The Curriculum Resource Directory will include links to online lesson materials that can be used as part of a unit study related to each unit’s checkpoint worksheet.

Course Requirements

Students in grades K-8 complete 9 units and the correlating checkpoint worksheets each semester, submitting one worksheet every two weeks. In areas with a Harmony high school program, high school students complete 18 checkpoint worksheets each semester and submit one worksheet each week. Parents and students are able to determine the sequence of the units of study in order to match their selected curriculum, meet individual needs, and customize their learning experience.
The submission of checkpoint worksheets demonstrates attendance in the course. Because our partner schools expect a paced format, students submit work every two weeks. Students who do not submit worksheets as outlined run the risk of falling behind and being considered truant.
Checkpoint worksheets are submitted online, generally as a pdf or jpeg file. Parents must have access to a scanner and a computer. If a scanner is not available, a scanner app for a smartphone can usually be used.

A Harmony Flex course offers parents and students flexibility in selecting course learning materials and activities based on a student’s learning style. Parents support students in working through individualized units of studies that focus on each of the grade-level standards listed below. Students then demonstrate competency by completing and submitting a Flex checkpoint worksheet for each unit.

Parents will have access to educational resources and the Flex Curriculum Resource Directory. The directory will supplement their selected course curriculum and to assist in planning and teaching each unit. The Curriculum Resource Directory will include links to online lesson materials that can be used as part of a unit study related to each unit’s checkpoint worksheet.

Course Requirements

Students in grades K-8 complete 9 units and the correlating checkpoint worksheets each semester, submitting one worksheet every two weeks. In areas with a Harmony high school program, high school students complete 18 checkpoint worksheets each semester and submit one worksheet each week. Parents and students are able to determine the sequence of the units of study in order to match their selected curriculum, meet individual needs, and customize their learning experience.
The submission of checkpoint worksheets demonstrates attendance in the course. Because our partner schools expect a paced format, students submit work every two weeks. Students who do not submit worksheets as outlined run the risk of falling behind and being considered truant.
Checkpoint worksheets are submitted online, generally as a pdf or jpeg file. Parents must have access to a scanner and a computer. If a scanner is not available, a scanner app for a smartphone can usually be used.

(Green) In this course, students receive structured lessons on readiness skills through emphasis on phonics, language skills, literature, and handwriting to help develop comprehension, build vocabulary, and promote a lifelong interest in reading.

Phonics: There are 36 units in the Phonics program. Each unit contains five lessons. In the first four lessons, students learn new skills or practice what they’ve previously learned. The fifth lesson in each unit begins with online review and practice activities that reinforce skills learned in the unit, and is followed by an offline unit assessment. In some lessons, students will read an online decodable reader. These are short, interactive stories that consist entirely of words students can read. Students will acquire the critical skills and knowledge required for reading and literacy.
Literature and Comprehension: The K12 Language Arts Literature and Comprehension program consists of 24 units with reading selections from the Classics anthology, nonfiction magazines, trade books, and other books students choose for themselves. Progressing from read-aloud texts to shared reading to guided reading instruction, students will listen to and read a variety of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction to develop their reading comprehension skills.
Handwriting: Students will continue with handwriting instruction using Zaner-Bloser curriculum.
Spelling: There are 18 units in K12 Spelling, which begins in the second semester of Grade 1. Each unit contains five lessons. The first lesson of a unit introduces new spelling words. In the second and third lessons, you and your students work together to practice the spelling words introduced in the first lesson. There is an online review in Lesson 4 and an offline assessment in Lesson 5. Students will master the spelling skills needed to read and write proficiently.
Vocabulary: K12 Vocabulary exposes students to a wide variety of words. Students will learn, review, and practice words online. There are 18 units in K12 Vocabulary. In the first eight lessons of each unit, students will study three sets of related words. Lesson 9 of each unit is a review of all the words. The 10th lesson is always a Unit Checkpoint, testing students on all the words they studied.
Writing Skills: The program includes 18 alternating units of Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics lessons and Composition lessons. In odd-numbered units, students will learn grammar, usage, and mechanics skills that will help them communicate in standard English. The fourth lesson of each unit is an online review of the unit’s skills, and the fifth lesson is an offline assessment. In even-numbered composition units, students will learn techniques for planning, organizing, and creating different kinds of writing. Each unit starts with a journal assignment that will help get students writing and generating ideas to be used in their writing assignments. The program includes rubrics and sample papers to help evaluate students’ work.

Flex Direct courses offer individualized study focused on state standards, while supported by certified teachers.

Teachers will provide direct instruction with lessons based on the Flex Direct quizzes/worksheets.
Students will have access to a weekly 15 to 30 minute recording with a teacher, and the recording can be viewed any time during the week.
Viewing the recorded teacher sessions is not mandatory but will be a very helpful resource in mastering the topics covered by the Flex Direct worksheets.

The Flex Direct program allows you to:

Create a unit study based on worksheet topics.
Determine the sequence for learning the concepts and completing the worksheets.
Have students complete and submit worksheets in any order.

For the Flex Direct program, all PLG lesson plans will be written for you by the teacher.

Throughout the semester, students demonstrate their knowledge of the standards by completing Flex Direct quizzes or worksheets.

Student learning may be designed as unit studies, allowing creativity and flexibility to explore the topics of study.
Curriculum and other learning materials for Flex Direct courses are provided by Harmony, at no cost to the family.
Mentors and instructors provide support as your children learn in dynamic ways.

Student Progress

Submitting quizzes/worksheets on time is an important aspect of a Flex Direct course. Students enrolled in a Flex Direct course agree to submit the quizzes/worksheets by the due dates, and this meets the attendance requirement for these courses. This enables our partner schools to review student work throughout the school year and to see measurable progress that correlates to state standards.

When you receive the Flex Direct packet, be sure to review the submission schedule for specific submission dates.

Elective Courses – Grades 7-8: 6 worksheet submissions per semester
