COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Minimusic   Grades  K-3
Full Year Course
Minimusic is a pre-reading music course which teaches basic theory concepts. Theory concepts are taught through stories, songs, games, worksheets, and class activities. Minimusic prepares students for studying piano, voice, and small instruments. Graduates are well prepared to begin regular music lessons on a primer level. Theory concepts taught are rhythm and steady beat; counting and clapping any combination of the note values learned, white key names; basic music symbols; line/space note recognition; basic pitch; direction of reading; intervals up to a 5th; musical alphabet; as well as familiarity with many musical instruments and their families.

Melody Motion   Grades 3-8
Full Year Course
Melody Motion brings classical music to life with a unique union of story and song in an appealing interactive approach called Fun with Composers by Deborah Ziolkoski. Dancing Bugs, Ringmasters and Trolls are just a few of the fascinating characters unveiled in the power of storytelling in our lessons. Each well-known piece comfortably draws children into the intriguing world of classical music as they quickly embrace drama, song, movement, instrumental play and art. Learning of rhythm, beat, note values, white note names, and key signatures will also be a part of the class. This approach nurtures the many ways which children learn, provides fun visuals, imaginative stories, and many opportunities for creative improvisation.

Sew Basic   Grades 3-8
Semester Course – May be taken both semesters, projects differ
This is a beginning sewing class. It starts out with learning about basic supplies and sewing safety. Once the students learn the parts of the sewing machine and how to use it, they will have the opportunity to sew on a sewing machine: a bookmark, bean bags, drawstring bag, and a pillow case among other fun projects.

Art Exploration   Grades K-3 and Grades 4-8
Semester Course – May be taken both semesters, projects differ
In this art class, students will experiment with various art mediums, will focus on basic art elements, and learn multiple art techniques. This course will prepare students to have a better experience in the other art courses of drawing and watercolor. All art supplies will be provided.

Watercolor   Grades 5-8
Semester Course – May be taken both semesters, projects differ
This class will guide you through basic techniques and hone your artistic skills using watercolors (water-soluble paint that has transparent or translucent properties) for creating artwork. This class has no prerequisite, however, taking the Art Exploration course first will better prepare you for this class. All art supplies will be provided.

Drawing   Grades 5-8
Semester Course – May be taken both semesters, projects differ
This class is project based, using various types of drawing pencils and art papers. This class has no prerequisite, however, taking the Art Exploration course first will better prepare you for this class. Art supplies will be provided.

STEM Laboratory  Grades K- 3
In this class we will be focusing on science, technology, engineering and math activities. Puzzles, games, projects and activities that inspire interest and skills in the sciences. The STEM Laboratory activities will keep little scientists engaged, learning and excited for their STEM-filled future.

Recreational Activities  Grades K-4 and Grades 4-8
Semester Course – May be taken both semesters
Immerse yourself in numerous games in the rec room. Students will have access to billiards, table tennis, foosball, air hockey, and board games. In this character development class students will not only learn the rules to some very popular games, but will also discuss honesty, good sportsmanship, healthy competition, friendship and more. Team building activities, tournaments, and improving your personal best will be all part of the experience while you play, play, and play some more.

Keyboarding  Grades 3-8
First Semester only
Keyboarding is the ability to operate a keyboard efficiently while typing, is an important skill that allows students to write fluently and communicate more effectively. Gaining typing skills is critical to success in school, college, and careers in the 21st Century. In this class we will learn to sit up tall, feet on the floor, shoulders relaxed, look at the screen and not our hands, stay on the home keys, only use our fingertips, pull our elbows in at our waist and feel for the raised dots on the F and the J keys. We will learn to use the home keys, alpha keys, punctuation, number keys, as well as practice speed and accuracy. We will also try a few practice ISAT tests so you will be more prepared to type your ELA PT essay with ease when it comes time for testing in the spring.

Introduction to Engineering  Grades 4-8
Second Semester only
Anything that is built must first be engineered, or planned out. An engineer is a person who designs and builds complex products, machines, systems, or structures. Engineers want to know how and why things work. In this course students will have the opportunity to build basic circuits, draw schematics, create flowcharts, and learn about simple machines. Students will be introduced to multiple fields of engineering: Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, and Computer Engineering.

Karate-Shitō-ryū  Grades K-4 and Grades 4-8
Full Year Course
What lessons are taught in Karate? Discipline, self reliance, self control, self esteem, self defense, and having fun. Karate is a great way to teach youth how to be respectful and to focus on defense rather than offense. Using defensive and counter attacking body movements, students will learn to honor their opponents and develop their character at the same time. This is a contact sport and will require students to purchase their own Karate outfit called a Gi (about $20). Karate sparring gear will be required. You can purchase your own (approximately $100-$150), or sparring gear sets will be available to rent for the year for $5 a month. Sparring gear can be shared if students are the same size and in different class periods.
