2025–26 Elective Course Requirements

We’re continuing with the elective updates introduced last year, and want to make sure you know what’s expected for the upcoming school year.

Grades K–4:

Students in grades K–4 will need to register for one general elective.
You can choose any elective, or opt for the Harmony Portfolio General Elective, which will be available at no cost for the 2025–26 school year.

Grades 5–12:

Students in grades 5–12 will need to register for one elective in each of the following areas:

  • World Language

  • Fine Arts / Music

  • Career and Technical Education (CTE)

  • Physical Education (PE)

These categories are broad so you can include activities you may already be doing. We’re here to support you and are happy to accept creative, flexible submissions.

You can meet these requirements in two ways:

  • Use the Harmony Portfolio: You can use and submit samples of your own curriculum. If you are not currently studying one of the elective areas, your mentor can provide a simple worksheet that you can use as your submission upon request. The Harmony Portfolio versions of these four electives are free for the 2025–26 school year as we help families adjust to the new system.

  • Register for a course from the course catalog: Examples include Rosetta Stone for World Language or Flex Piano for Fine Arts/Music.

What Content Counts Toward Each Elective?

  • World Language: Any language learning, including American Sign Language (ASL), even short-term or integrated studies (e.g., learning some French during a Europe unit).

  • Fine Arts / Music: Drawing, painting, playing an instrument, singing, dance, and other creative or performance-based activities.

  • CTE (Career and Technical Education): Hands-on learning like gardening, agriculture, computer or typing skills, sewing, cooking, and more.

  • PE (Physical Education): Any physical activity such as sports, hiking, karate, ballet, gymnastics or similar movement-based programs.

Why Are These Electives Important?

Adding these electives to your student’s schedule helps us:

  • Meet state requirements

  • Recognize the great learning already happening

  • Stay aligned with attendance and reporting needs

  • Ensure that school funding going toward students resources are tied to registered courses

If you’ve already registered for your core classes but haven’t added these electives yet, your mentor is happy to help. Just send her a quick email to get started!
